Operations Supervisor (OS)

Job Description

A Operations Supervisor should be a minimum of an Ambulance Care Assistant (ACA) FREC 3 qualification (Or equivalent national award) you will have extensive operational experience to include patient transport and medical event working. An NVQ qualification customer service or team leading experience is desirable. Your role is to operationally supervise staff on the base you are allocated ensuring effectiveness and quality of service is upheld. You will supervise a team of operational ambulance staff on base.

Shift pattern:
Various Shifts including days, nights and weekends.

Based at one of our sites in Sussex and Hampshire, they work shifts, going out in all weathers at all hours, sometimes working in difficult conditions such as in confined spaces and on the strategic road network.

You will find that no two shifts will be the same. They could be on base attending to operational paperwork and reports, dealing with an investigation, assisting new  operational staff or teaching on courses.  On the road as part of an operational crew transferring patients to out patient appointments, patients to or from a specialist centre or attending trauma cases at an event. There will be a need to audit many areas to ensure the quality of our services.

You will be expected to drive and audit quality of operational staff on a range of ambulance vehicles under normal or if qualified emergency (blue light) circumstances and carry out checks to vehicles at the start of and during each shift, to make sure they are clean, have fuel and are appropriately stocked.

You will need to be highly proficient in the use of all medical and life support equipment carried on our vehicles that is appropriate to your skill level and asses operational staff in its use.

A key responsibility of the Operational Supervisor is to audit that all equipment is carefully stored, transported and cared for so that it is always in good working order.  It is important that you guide and supervise all operational staff in the above.

You will need to complete relevant documentation, be familiar with and use communication equipment (including radios and telephones)

Operational Supervisor’s will need to work effectively as part of a team of people, including other operational managers so we deliver a safe and effective service.  You will also liaise closely with other healthcare professional staff (such as Paramedics Nurses & Doctors) and representatives from other emergency services – including the fire and police & coastguard services.

These are some of the essential criteria you will need to be successful as an Clinical Supervisor:

  • Hold a minimum of FREC Level 3 qualification.
  • A valid full B (Preferably C1) category driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points or any short period disqualification.
  • Hold or be prepared to work towards a BTEC Level 2 in Team Leading.
  • (If ECA or above) IHCD or Future Quals D1 & D2 Emergency Driving qualification (or equivalent).
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to make decisions, take responsibility and respond to a changing workload.
  • Ability to remain calm while working under pressure.
  • Ability to motivate within a Team environment.
  • Excellent Customer Service / People Skills.
  • Flexible approach to work and shift work.
